Gaurav was a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry at New York University. His research interests lie in applications of Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics to soft matter systems. Before moving to the United States for his doctoral studies, Gaurav completed his undergraduate studies in India, which comprised a 3-year Bachelor's in Science (with Honors in Chemistry) from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata and a 2-year Master's in Science (Major: Chemistry) from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. His research at IIT Kanpur under the supervision of Dr. Srihari Keshavamurthy involved characterizing the transition states of a typical isomerization reaction using theoretical methods in spectroscopy. At NYU, Gaurav's thesis focused on the self-assembly of systems through dynamic bonding motifs, including DNA-coated oil emulsion droplets, nanoparticles, and proteins.
